Cosmetic Nurse

My name is Natalie, I am a registered nurse and have been practicing since 1993, I entered the cosmetic industry in 2013 and have enjoyed the diversity and autonomy it has given me as a health professional.  I belong to the New Zealand Aesthetic Nurses Association (ANA) and an accredited member of the Clinical Aesthetic Network of New Zealand (CANNZ), obtaining gold star status early 2020 which means I have met the stringent criteria governing my practice. I am also a trained Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse of 31 years and continue to practice in this field and find the balance between the private and public sector keeps things real.

The cosmetic industry is fast evolving and an exciting industry to be part of, for many clients it helps increase self-confidence and consequently improves quality of life.  I love the fact my clients are happier in themselves, have a kick in their step and possess more self-worth.  This is important to me and reflects the dedication I have to this industry in tailoring prescriptions and treatments carefully.

My approach is conservative, meaning less is often more.  I have an inherent appreciation for the uniqueness of each client and his or her natural anatomy - and this is respected every step of the way.   I believe there is perfection in imperfection which is not only reflected in my company name –`Imperfect’ but is fundamental for desirable outcomes. Understanding that not all faces are equal and accepting that not everyone will look good with full lips, and that cheek enhancements can be striking and youthful for some, but for others it can add to the ageing process by making the eye sockets appear deeper.  Many variables need to be considered when designing a treatment plan, to ensure distortion does not take precedence over beauty.

An ancient eastern aesthetic philosophy known as wabi-sabi resonates with me and has helped me fine tune my thoughts and contribution to this industry.  It is about understanding and accepting yourself – your unique perfection and enhancing just that — not feverishly trying to rebuild yourself to pose as something else.  It is `understated elegance’ (wabi) and `takes pleasure in the imperfect’ (sabi).  It is about specialised craftsmanship that recognises this, and can enhance the natural state or preserve it, so it simply belongs.

As a Cosmetic Nurse some of the treatments I administer require the use of prescription-only medicines . In New Zealand this means I require the oversight of a medical doctor, preferably a Plastic Surgeon, Dermatologist or New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (NZSCAM) doctor. My direct oversight is with Doctor Brent Krivan who is a Fellow of NZSCAM and has a practice of his own `Clinic Eleven’ located on the Kapiti Coast. Dr Brent Krivan graduated from Otago University in 1986, and not only specialises in Appearance Medicine where he is internationally trained in the techniques of Facial Contouring and Volumetric Face Lifting but he has a sub-specialty in the management of skin cancer and treatment. Staying current with industry trends, attending conferences, using state of the art equipment and product are all part of my mantra to ensure best practice - Dr Krivan is an integral part of facilitating this. I have the upmost respect for Dr Krivan and value his depth of knowledge, teachings, and support - I am privileged to have such an approachable hands on resource.
