Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is caused by overactive sweat glands and can affect the armpit, palms or feet. This can be a debilitating condition for people who are affected and often cause them considerable stress and can impact significantly on self confidence and self esteem. Botulinum injections can have dramatic effects on excessive sweating often eliminating the problem altogether.

When treating hyperhidrosis, botulinum toxin works by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands. Normally your nervous system activates your sweet glands when your body temperature rises - this is how your body cools itself. In people with hyperhidrosis the nerves that signal the sweat glands are overactive - when injected with botulinum toxin these overactive nerves are essentially paralysed. - When your nerves cant signal your sweat glands, you don’t sweat. It is a localised treatment so stopping the sweat in one area of the body does’t effect the other areas of the body - your body can still sweat in other places to regulate its internal temperature. The treatment for hyperhidrosis involves a series of small injections just under the skin to the area of concern. Tiny micro needles are used to minimise pain and ice packs and localised numbing creams can be offered if necessary.
