Grumpy Face

Grumpy face or sad face is the result of the Depressor Anguli Oris muscles - the DAO’s. The DAO’s are attached to the corners of the mouth and extend down to the lower jaw. As their name suggests, they are a depressor muscle which means when contracted, movement is in a downward direction resulting with the corners of the mouth heading this way too. When the DAO’s are injected correctly they are significantly weakened thus minimising this downward drag. Results can often deliver a pleasing `up turn’ to the corners of the mouth as the less robust elevator muscles are largely left unopposed. The DAO muscles repetitive movement is responsible for creating ‘Marionette lines’ and therefore an ideal target for preventative botulinum toxin treatment. Reducing DAO movement will preserve volume in this area and help avoid the need for filler to correct any lines or deficits in the future.

Left: Before and after photo’s of a client in her mid 40’s with strong DAO muscles. Note how she is unable to create the same downward drag after treatment and how the lower face area is less dimply. She has also had treatment into chin to prevent `orange peel chin’ and the further development of a mental crease and chin protrusion.

Right: Subtle but pleasing results of an `up turn’ to the corner of the mouth following DAO treatment and a tiny deposit of filler. This client is in her 50’s and feels her overall appearance looks a lot happier.
