A gummy smile or as its technically known, excessive gingival display is when the upper lip is raised too far when smiling, revealing 2-4mm of gum. A number of factors can contribute to this but it can occur because of a short upper lip or an overactive orbicularis oris muscle. A gummy smile can often make a person feel self-conscious and can impact on the freedom one normally has when wanting to laugh, smile or even talk. Because a smile is the most recognised expression in the world and is the cornerstone of social interaction treating this with a very small, well placed botulinum injection can be life changing.
